Trichoblastoma is a common and usually benign neoplasm of cat skin, characterised as a tumour derived from or reduplicating the primitive hair germ of embrionic follicular development.

In a study in 1997, 26% of routine skin biopsies revealed trichoblastomas, frequently present on the neck and head.

Histological appearance

  • Tumor cells are fusiform
  • Islands of neoplastic cells vary in size
  • At the periphery, neoplastic basal cells are columnar, and appear palisaded adjacent to the basal lamina
  • Central portion of the mass is occupied by narrow, elongated cells with an interwoven pattern
  • In the central area of the lobubules the spindle cells may have a more extensive eosinophilic cytoplasm
